21st June 2010 : EnCoRe completes its first prototype
|
Privacy |
The EnCoRe project has completed the first prototype of its system that aims to turn off the deluge of personal data that floods the internet and threatens people’s security and identity. EnCoRe is marking this breakthrough with a public panel discussion on the subject: Control over your personal data: who, how much, why?, to be held at the London School of Economics in the early evening of Tuesday 29 June.
HW leads the implementation efforts and has worked closely with lead partner HP Labs to design and implement the first prototype which illustrates how privacy controls can be integrated into corporate IT systems. This is the first of 3 use cases which aim to enhance and extend the social science and technology research which will help businesses and Government adopt scalable, cost-effective and robust consent and revocation methods for controlling the use, storing, locating and sharing of personal data.

26th March, 2010 : Dustbot exceeds expectations
|
Resilient and Secure Robotics and Sensor Networks |
EC FP6 Project Dustbot receives notification from the European Commission of successful completion. HW contributed using its security expertise to perform risk assessment and provide guidance on securing the communication infrastructure which controls and monitors the operation of the Dustbot’s whilst they roam through public spaces.
The final report from the EC is quoted :
“DustBot has successfully realized its vision of developing and demonstrating service robots embedded in an ambient intelligence infrastructure, and the project did groundbreaking work in the realm of robotics in unstructured environments for the applications of environmental monitoring and city waste management. This project achieved what it had promised and more”

11th January 2010 : Powerline Communication for SmartGrids
|
Resilient and Secure Powerline Communication |
EC FP7 project DLC-VIT4IP successfully kicks off in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Working as a consortium already for more than 2 years, DLC-VIT4IP is successfully funded by the European Commission to carry out a 3 year research project to research and develop new techniques for the communication of data over electricity power distribution grids. The project shall implement and deploy innovative powerline communication nodes and verify communication performance using new techniques to achieve unprecedented levels of resilience necessary for the critical monitoring and control of power grid components. This is considered an essential step contributing hugely to necessary improvement in energy efficiency in power distribution grids.
HW combines its expertise in powerline communication node development and IP multimedia Quality of Service techniques.
The project is lead by KEMA Consulting with powerline communication product suppliers, Develo, iAd and chipset vendors Yitran. Testbeds are provided by Isreal Electric and German utility, Vattenfall.

22nd July 2009 : NI2S3 Kicks Off for CIIP |
Resilient and Secure Critical Information Infrastructures |
In a meeting hosted by coordinators Vitrociset Spa. in Rome, EC FP7 project NI2S3 begins a 2 year journey towards the definition and guidance of new ways to achieve Critical Information Infrastructure Protection (CIIP). Combining military concepts such as Network Enabled Capability with advanced Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) techniques, NI2S3 will define and prototype CIIP systems as targeted towards the management of civil critical infrastructures as found in Airports, Highways management etc.
HW is contributing its expertise in Vulnerability Assessment for SOA in close collaboration with long term partners at the University of Florence. Industrial partners also include the Polish giant Comarch.

The 'DustCart' is showcased at the ICT conference in Lyon 25-28 November 2008. HW is a principle partner in the DustBot project playing a key role in the risk assessment and policy development for securing of the communication infrastructure which is vital for the dispatch and control of the DustBot suite of urban hygiene robots. The DustBot project received a glowing acknowledgement during the conference plenery from MEP Malcolm Harbour "I was delighted to see the robot rubbish collector, now that would really be something to say that ICT is helping to keep our streets clean as well as all the wonderful things that it is doing for us.".

Notification has been recieved from the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) that HW led project OccuTek has been selected for funding. The project start date has been set for the 17th September 2007, and the project duration is planned for 24 months.
OccuTek is an applied research project to investigate and validate the use of mobile phones to verify passenger vehicle occupancy as a means of promoting ride sharing through occupancy related discounts to road usage charging (RUC). Results will be demonstrated using a car equipped with a RUC device. The objective is to create a low cost, occupant friendly, after market solution that can be widely deployed as an integral part of RUC systems including TDP. This is a highly innovative approach to meet the challenge of reliable occupancy detection - not yet seen in the published literature. It offers a scalable solution that by its very nature works anytime, anywhere without roadside infrastructure. OccuTek also enables occupancy to be utilised in a vast number of applications, including 'step-changes' in E-Call and Adaptive Traffic Management, which shall be demonstrated within the project scope.
