LOCATION INNOVATION :

Accurate, low-cost, scalable location determination for all Mobile Terminals”

Over the past 5 years, HW has been applying extensive research within ‘Radio Propagation’ and ‘Information Theory’ to develop scalable solutions which can provide location determination on all Mobile Terminals (MT) based on their RF communication capability. This enables operation without the need for any additional hardware to provide an accurate approximation of MT location. Technical activities within this field have included:

• Reinforced Learning Algorithms and the development of advanced Semi-Empirical Propagation Models.

• Accurate Probabilistic location determination techniques based on utilising GSM Received Signal Strength Indications (RSSI) from neighbouring Base Stations.

• Novel Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) Multi-Hop position augmentation strategies, whereby one or more MT(s) in close proximity may aid location determination.

• Implementations of Fuzzy Logic reasoning concepts for advanced, context-aware Map Matching algorithms.

• Research and development of novel statistical algorithms for implementations involving Bluetooth and 802.11 for indoor/outdoor positioning with high accuracy and minimal training requirements.

• The seamless integration of multiple positioning technologies.

• Context Casting and Behaviour Analysis based upon location.

Research Activities for 'Location Innovation' within HW have been applied to provide a number of key solutions within several application sectors, both at a governmental, commercial and consumer level. These research activities are highlighted below (please click on links for further information):

• Enhanced GSM-based Cellular positioning

• Bluetooth / W-LAN positioning

• GNSS Augmentation and Redundancy within positioning

• Identification of vehicle occupancy levels

• Transmitter Device Location Identification (TDLI)

A number of forward-thinking projects have aided research activities upon Location Determination within HW Communications Ltd, and currently HW is active within activities to: (i) Provide scalable and sustainable solutions for Location Based Services (LBS), and (ii) overcome vulnerabilities associated within current 'Location Determination' solutions.
